English Tapes

I'd known Abbey about three years before she got in her head to go into television. How the fuck she ever came up with that one. Not exactly television, she said, "English Tapes."

"English Tapes?"

It was for mexicans. Some idiot she knew, knew somebody, that needed an extra in these foreign language tapes. So that Mexicans could learn English.

"English Tapes?"

Within six weeks we were getting fan mail. She was too lazy to read and wanted me to read them to her:

Dear Amy,

Mi name is Miguel. You have change my life. Also, You are beatiful.

Good Evening,

Miguel.

She got famous. It got so whenever we went out some Mexican would recognize her.

I really hoped that she would take advantage of her opportunity. I mean, she was changing people's lives. If it was me I'd get off on the whole experience of it. I'd embrace the Mexican community. I'd shake hands with earnest eyes. I'd meet so many people. I'd love to be famous. I'd be good at it. I would do it right.

But nope. She just liked being famous.

IN THINKING ABOUT TIME AND TRENDS

i think that ever since humanity, the future has held the promise of The Force and lasers. think about old english epics, like beowulf, or the lord of the rings. There is that part of us that takes fantasy dragons as history. There really was a time when most of humanity believed in dragons and little gnomes. We think of the past as a time when magic, and swordfights, and swarthy men with battle axes, really roamed the earth. But we know that never happened, it's just a myth that we buy into. And we always think of the future like Star Wars, or Trek, of anything space-centered. there will be aliens, and lasers and The Force. But what do we see in the present that would even make us think for a second that any of that was justifiably reasonable. nothing. ergo....... does/has humanity always had the opinion, as a facet of our very nature, that both the future and the past are filled with magic, even though our present is filled with mundane bullshit, as I expect the case to be?

what to do if they should ever stop smoking

i guess i'd have to take up a new profession. i basically live on the poor habits of others. That and their quarter tips. smoking is the peanut butter to drinking's jelly. if one goes, it all goes to shit.
